Planing Sailboat Speed

New from psychosnail, learn to sail online, course on how to sail for beginners. yes, it's time for online sailing lessons.. for a boat hull, a simple way to think of theoretical boat speed is that a vessel is limited by the wave that boats hull creates.that is, because it is a displacement vessel it doesn’t climb its bow wave, as a planning vessel would, which limits the boats speed.. Hull speed or displacement speed is the speed at which the wavelength of a vessel's bow wave is equal to the waterline length of the vessel. as boat speed increases from rest, the wavelength of the bow wave increases, and usually its crest-to-trough dimension (height) increases as well.. Planing boat theory. first, a disclaimer. than the same boat planing at a lower speed. that term, “dynamic lift”, is all-important and, to be called planing, a boat should be getting a significant portion of its lifting force from dynamic sources in addition to the buoyancy force. just what portion of lift should be dynamic in order to.

Flying saucer high-speed planing sailboat o'day flying saucer high-speed planing sailboat (1967) this high-speed planing sailboat has a self-tending jib and a bendy rig that automatically adjusts the molded sail shape — no matter what the weather.. The prediction of hull speed before planing is most simply the square root of hull waterline length in feet x 1.34. depending on hull shape and power available from the sails, some boats easily exceed "maximum theoretical hull speed" .. This formula applied to planing boats only and only takes into account the displacement of the hull, ignoring length. this may seem odd but as opposed to a displacement hull, the most important factor in determining speed is displacement..
