Re: making loud noise when turning help!!! unfortunately, i just learned the hard way, but it will either be your gimbal bearings or water in the bellows. you can trim the engine all the way up and briefly inspect the bellows (rubber boots) on the transom side of the outdrive. check for cracks or holes.. Whining from the power steering pump will get louder when turning the steering wheel from side to side and the usual cause is low power steering fluid. the best way to diagnose the other bearing noises is with a mechanic’s stethoscope. failure to repair any one of the items making a whining sound can result in a vehicle break down..
I/o or outboard--the noise level is a function of soundproofing. new outboards have modern soundproofing materials in their cowling that help a lot. (and of course 2 stroke vs 4 stroke makes a difference.) i have an i/o in my 28 foot pontoon. it used to be pretty loud at full throttle. when i replaced. 1982 mercury 115hp outboard. noise above 2500 rpm..
